The 1967 amendments signed by President Johnson raise monthly Social Security payments for about 237 million beneficiaries and add 465,000 new ones. Automatic increases start in March, with minimums rising from 44 to 55 dollars, and special benefits for older widows and dependents also climbing. Some groups must apply, including the disabled and widows, with offices ready to assist and, if needed, home visits.

She warns of rising living costs since 1933 and a general upward trend but says careful shopping and timing can beat inflation.
