Charles H. Gates 72 of 1543 Sixth Avenue died Wednesday morning in a Springville nursing home. Born March 1, 1891 in Cedar Rapids, he married Sara Jane Towne in July 1947. He was a World War I veteran who served in France. Services Friday at 3 p.m. at Baxter Memorial Chapel. Burial at Oak Shade. Friends may call after Thursday noon.

Marengo Iowa is allocating ten thousand dollars for civil defense for the first time in its 1964 county budget approved by the board of supervisors. The plan names Dean E. Smith of Williamsburg as part time civil defense administrator amid a wide budget including general expenses and road projects.
George Schindler was sworn in as a county supervisor, succeeding Grant Olson who retires after 1963 as board chairman. Theodore Lane remains 1964 chairman with William Henry as a fellow supervisor. Donna Kay Ranfeld named deputy auditor. Engineer Orrin Gode’s salary up $400 to 10000 yearly and Raymond Tompkins, assistant engineer, up $420 annually.
Des Moines AP report notes Iowa farmers are expected to participate in the 1964 feed grain program with Fred R. McLain predicting more than three million acres will be kept out of corn grain sorghum and barley production. He cited 2.4 million acres diverted in 1963 under the program.
Harold Keith Schumacher, 22, of Marengo, was arrested by Sheriff William Spurrier for supplying liquor to minors. Judge James P. Gaffney fined him 300 dollars or 60 days in jail for a New Year’s Eve violation.

Mrs. L. W. Butler, born January 12, 1865 in Monroe Wisconsin, will celebrate her 99th birthday this Sunday. A former rural teacher, she helped organize the first school near the Butler homestead and lived near Atwood Kansas before settling in Williamsburg. She has resided in a Williamsburg nursing home since 1961 and remains keenly interested in public affairs and social visits.
Harold Lovlien, 53, of Burr Oak was struck by a pickup driven by Henry Bakken, 49, Decorah, while crossing Main Street. Lovlien suffered a crushed chest and was reported in fair condition at a La Crosse hospital after the 5 30 p m incident near his parked car.
Iowa county adds thirteen field assessors for the year led by county assessor E. L. Lindenmayer. New appointees include Ruth Papritz of Williamsburg Dale Risdon of Hartford Ladora and W J Walter of Iowa township. Lenox township will be assessed by Don Langlas and Richard Edwards. Several long serving assessors remain listed with towns and years of service.
