Gerald E Smothers 27 a coal truck driver for W H France Lumber died Thursday after the truck bed toppled onto him at a Sigourney yard. Alvin Wiseman, a fellow worker, found the body while the two unloaded coal from a railroad car. Smothers a World War II veteran survived by parents and five siblings.

Gen. Curtis E. LeMay, commander of the Strategic Air Command, will headline the Cedar Rapids banquet honoring ten outstanding young men of the United States. The event, hosted by the U. S. Junior Chamber of Commerce, features a $15 plate dinner expected to attract about 950 guests at the Memorial Coliseum. Surcharge on some parcels to start April first

Van Horne Water Supply Restored
Van Horne residents had water again on Wednesday night after two breaks in water mains forced a noon shutdown. The breaks near the south edge of town were repaired by Wednesday afternoon and water was restored that evening. Street and water commissioner Jack Banse could not determine the cause, noting breaks have occurred in non freezing weather. Schools closed Wednesday afternoon due to the outage but resumed Thursday morning.
