More Members but Smaller Percentage
In a Washington backed survey the National Council of Churches reports the share of Americans who belong to churches fell by two tenths of a percent in 1962. Total membership reached 116,109,929 or 63.4 percent of the population, while Protestant totals rose slightly and Catholic growth slowed from 1960. The Yearbook of American Churches also notes large numbers in Jewish and other denominations, plus data on pastors, Sunday schools, and a $32 million drop in church construction value from 1960 to 1961.
