Freight Train Derailment Near Missouri Valley

A 65 car Illinois Central freight train derailed Sunday night between Missouri Valley and Loveland. Two cars split from the train causing heavy damage to cars tracks and possibly a bridge. No injuries reported. Train from Fort Dodge to Council Bluffs. Traffic to resume by Monday as lines rerouted via Chicago and North Western.

DES MOINES AP The Republican legislative policy committee met to map recommendations on a positive program for all major fields of legislation for the 1959 session. Senator Jack Schroeder chairman and senate majority leader declined to comment until proposals are offered to a GOP caucus next Saturday. Republican state central committee members were invited as observers.

Fire Gutts Two Story House in Clarence

Fire Sunday gutted the two story frame home of the Arlyn Wenndt family and Beverly's Beauty shop. Wenndnts lost all possessions but shop equipment mostly saved. Firemen said the blaze started near the basement furnace and prevented spreading to a nearby Cities Service station.

Supervisor Resigns From Fayette Board

John Fay of Fayette resigns from the Fayette board of supervisors effective January 31. The three member board will name his successor Tuesday. Bill Miehe of Oelwein is expected to receive appointment to the term starting January 1, 1960. Floyd Gilley of Maynard is board chairman and Jim Niles of West Union is the other member.

Spencer Man Rescued From Blazing House

A passerby alerted authorities to a fire at Milliman’s two story frame home in Spencer saving Jake Pee 80 from possible death. The residence was destroyed in the blaze.

Randy Jones, 244, son of Mr and Mrs L M Jones of Sioux City, died in a local hospital from leukemia. His older brother Ronny, 10, is under care at the Shrine hospital in Minneapolis for polio.

Watkins Savings Bank Burglarized

Special to The Gazette reports a breakin at Watkins Savings Bank in Watkins. The robbery occurred Sunday night with entry via broken front door and unlocked lock. The burglars failed to blast the vault with an acetylene torch, but ransacked the office and stole a box of pennies and a .45 caliber Colt revolver. The Benton County sheriff's office investigated on Monday.

Four Burglary Incidents Reported in Lamont

Four breakins at Lamont occurred early Sunday with losses totaling 67 dollars. Items stolen include 60 dollars from Elmer Smith’s service station 2 dollars from Bowden’s service station 5 dollars from Merle Bliss lumber yard office and a revolver with ammunition from Glen Gruman implement store. A safe dial was knocked off at Bowden’s but the safe held no contents. Investigators link these to a gang active in Greeley and Colesburg last Friday.

Tipton dealer Tipton R. Miller is named chairman of the Cedar county board of supervisors. Elmer Hinkhouse of Wilton Junction Ted Worrall of West Branch and Raymond Diermann of Clarence are appointed inheritance tax appraisers for 1959.

Ed ward Bonici asked Federal Judge Fred Taylor to run sentences concurrently for passing a worthless check and impersonating a commerce official. He received one year for the check and two years for impersonation, totaling three years when served consecutively. Foss Baby Lives Only Five Hours

A boy born Sunday to Gov. and Mrs. Joe Foss died after five hours. Mrs. Foss, off critical list, rested comfortably. Gov. Foss, a World War I Marine flying hero, flew her to Sioux Falls from Pierre after premature labor, the baby born by emergency cesarean section.

Jack Erickson Found Dead in Des Moines

Arnold S. Jack Erickson 46 state editor of The Associated Press in Iowa was found dead in his Des Moines home basement Monday morning. The coroner said he killed himself with a shotgun after noting ill health from a lung ailment and wishing not to burden his family. He had been a prominent newspaper figure in Iowa and Nebraska for two decades.
