Shortage of Iowa child psychiatrists strains families
Iowa faces a shortage of child psychiatrists with 65 of 99 counties lacking specialists. Iowa Citys University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and UnityPoint St Luke’s Hospital each operate limited pediatric psychiatric beds, forcing patient shuffles and travel. Experts urge expanded residency slots and loan repayment programs to attract clinicians to rural and underserved areas.
