Alice K. Janss 87 of Belle Plaine formerly of La Porte City died December 21, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids of natural causes. Memorial services are set for January 7 at 10 30 a.m. at American Lutheran Church La Porte City with inurnment in West View Cemetery. She was born March 30, 1924 near La Porte City daughter of Jurgen and Theresa Arp Jebe and married Henry Fleisher in 1948 and Donald Janss in 2006. She farmed and worked at a hatchery in Dysart and Hicks Plumbing and belonged to the LPC Garden Club and Neighborhood Community Club. Survivors include her husband Donald Janss of Belle Plaine and several others.

Frank Fitzsimmons 88 of Monticello died Sunday January 1 2012 at Mercy Medical Center Cedar Rapids after a long illness. Funeral Saturday January 7 at Goettsch Funeral Home Monticello with burial at Oakwood Cemetery military honors. He served in the US Army 1946 1948 and worked at Wilson Foods Energy Manufacturing Collins Radio retiring 1984. Survived by wife Linda three children seven grandchildren 13 great grandchildren and four sisters. He started the Legion League Softball in 1975 and was Monticello Drill Team founder and VFW member.

Gary Robert Shelangoski 74 of Yellville Arkansas formerly of Brighton died Sunday January 1 2012 at his son’s home. Born November 10 1937 in Brighton he was a U of Iowa chemical engineering graduate 1965 and a US Navy veteran. He worked for Dow Chemical Reichhold and later volunteered as a firefighter and emergency medical responder in Pine Mountain District. He is survived by his wife Donna four sons stepchildren 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Cremation requested with a memorial Mass January 7 2012 at St Joseph Catholic Church East Pleasant Plain burial St Joseph Cemetery. Memorials to Pine Mountain Volunteer Fire Department or St Andrew Catholic Church.

Iowa Supreme Court to review Becker murder conviction
The Iowa Supreme Court agreed to review the case of Mark Becker 26 who was convicted of first degree murder for fatally shooting high school coach Ed Thomas in June 2009 Becker had argued legal insanity at the time of the crime but a jury rejected the defense and he received a life sentence The appeal followed an Iowa Court of Appeals ruling that juror instructions on the insanity defense were incorrect. In Wellman Wellman city administrator Mark Baker was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at Freeman Foods and a special closed council session was planned.
