HUD funding cut jeopardizes Iowa HACAP housing program
HACAP faces loss of 4.4 million dollars in HUD funds after 11 pages missing from Iowa’s grant request. Cedar Rapids and state officials supply 45 days of stopgap support to keep transitional housing running while HUD appeal is prepared. Mediacom raises rates amid programming costs
Mediacom increased rates to 31.75 last February from 29.75 after acquiring the system in July 2001, a 20 percent rise in 19 months. Spokeswoman Debora Blume says gains come from extra channels, better tech, and 24 hour service as programming firms like Disney ESPN and Fox hike fees. Local customer Paul Clarahan notes the notices are easy to miss and the extra $50 yearly hit. Tariffs with the FCC justify annual adjustments. Iowa City rates to rise in March and North Liberty in April.
