The Most Rev Samuel A Stritch archbishop of Milwaukee was named archbishop of Chicago by Pope Pius XII succeeding the late George Cardinal Mundelein The 52 year old native of Nashville Tenn was elected chairman of the administrative board of the National Catholic Welfare Conference last November He will replace Cardinal Mundelein as head of Chicago's Catholic hierarchy.

Finland detains and executes Russian espionage ring leader
Stockholm reports Finland exposed a large Russian espionage ring in the far north. The ring, operating eight years with 60 members, allegedly recruited Finnish citizens and soldiers and its Finnish captain and lieutenant led the group. The captain died by suicide before exposure and the others were executed.
