Iowa MSU game opens new Big Ten TV format in Hawkeye Arena

Michigan State visits Iowa in the season opener at Hawkeye Carver Arena as the Big Ten adopts a midweek game shift for a new television contract. ESPN WGN Chicago and Iowa Television Network will carry the Iowa versus Michigan State contest starting at 7 p.m. local time.

Ohio State Edges Kansas 64 61 In Nonconference Rally

Ohio State guard Ron Stokes hit a three point play with 11 seconds left to lift the Buckeyes to a 64-61 win over Kansas in Kansas City. Carl Henry led Kansas with 22 points while Tony Campbell paced Ohio State with 17 in the victory. Kansas guard Kelly Knight had 11.

IHSAA Plans Seeded Tournament For Iowa High School Boys

The Iowa Boys High School Athletic Association announces seed based 1983 basketball tournament structure for classes 3A and 2A. Teams earn points for wins over different class opponents, with final seeds based on average points. District 11 and 12 in 3A and District 9 in 2A feature Jefferson Washington Marion Iowa City High and Kennedy Linn-Mar Prairie Iowa City West respectively. Sectional play starts February 21 and the state tournament runs March 15 to 19 at Veterans Auditorium Des Moines.

Calgary Flames Top Soviets 3-2 In Cold War Clash

Lanny McDonald scored and assisted as the Calgary Flames blanketed the Soviet All Star squad with tight checking. The win evened the six game series at two apiece as the world champions rallied late but could not complete the comeback. Reggie Lemelin replaced Don Edwards in the second period and held off a late Soviet surge.
