No immediate action to shut down Milwaukee
The Milwaukee Road trustee Richard B. Ogilvie said no immediate steps will be taken to shut down large portions of the bankrupt railroad though the Milwaukee Railroad Restructuring Act allows it. He noted plans to abandon or sell all but 3,200 miles of the 9,800 mile system and keep the Kansas City line, while the Marquette to Sheldon line may operate until a buyer is found. Funding for lines outside Milwaukee II could expire March 1 unless actions occur, and he cited care to avoid stranding shippers. On this date in 1961, the United States severed relations with Cuba.
