Ice Layer Blocking Cedar Rapids Streets and Frigid Forecast
Cedar Rapids faced tough street conditions as hard ice from freezing rain and drifting snow resisted plowing efforts. Public Improvements Commissioner Donald Canney said warmer weather is needed for salt and chemicals to work, while Public Works Supt Harry Hilton cited a 30 to 35 degree day as crucial. The city’s 100 man plow crew remained on duty, urged residents to move stored vehicles, and noted arterial roads fared slightly better due to traffic wear. Frigid forecasts warned of sub zero temperatures into the weekend, delaying relief.
