Govt Farm Payments May Bolster Budget-Cut Bloc
A record 3.4 billion dollars in federal farm payments to wheat cotton and feed grains in 1966 may empower groups seeking congressional cuts in farm programs. 1967 forecast shows smaller payments yet debate intensifies over whether farmers need these subsidies and planting controls tied to them. Farm Bureau President Charles B. Shuman calls for disengagement from government programs to unlock farmers economic potential amid pressure to curb costs.

Odds Against High Yields Say Experts
Iowa State University agronomists E R Duncan and R H Shaw warn that prospects for high crop yields this year are not favorable. Subsoil moisture is generally low across the state, and only improved moisture and cooler temperatures in July and August can boost yields. They advise careful fertilizer balancing, early corn planting, timely weed and insect control, and considering an early hybrid to offset stress from dry soils. If subsoil moisture does not improve by spring, moving to a good meadow may be needed for next year.

Iowa Farm Income Outlook Is Favorable Says Futrell
Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell says 1967 farm income prospects look favorable nationally and in Iowa though moisture deficits add uncertainty. Returns from hogs and eggs may drop while dairying profits rise. cattle prices should rise but higher feed costs temper gains. Farm expenses are expected to rise and corn and soybean markets depend on moisture, exports, and acreage.
