Iowa Farm Price Index Advances

Iowa's index of prices received by farmers for all farm products rose 16 points to 274 percent of the 1910-14 base for the month ending December 15. All crops gained except wheat and rye, with corn up 9 cents, soybeans up 22 cents, and hay up 1.40 dollars per ton. Livestock index rose 6 points driven by an 8 percent meat-animal rise. hog prices up 2.90 per cwt. Beef cattle fell 50 cents per cwt.

Farmers weigh changes in 1954 due to drought and costs

Virgil Coffman of South English plans to maintain crops but notes subsoil moisture shortage and possible corn allotments and follows a soil conservation plan. Monticello farmer plans similar cattle program as last year

Lyle Tobiason of Monticello says he will maintain about the same number of beef cows for spring calving with a few replacements. Cattle and calves stay on pasture in fall, calves started on full feed around December 1, aiming for an early fall market at 800 to 900 pounds.

Langworthy farmer P Wilken says he will increase his sow count by about four head for spring and aims to raise 200 or more pigs next year. He expects hog prices to stay near $20 for the next ten months and wants to expand oats acreage but cannot due to crop rotation constraints.
