A. Hoyt, managing editor of The Gazette, is named chairman of the Washington news committee of the Associated Press Managing Editors for 1950. The group will survey AP coverage in the capital, with T. R. Waring, W. C. Janson, Richard Blalock, and W. W. Raynolds also serving on the committee.
Former president Hoover and Senator Knowland pressed for a tougher approach to Formosa and China. They criticized the administration's slow, dust settling policy and urged prompt, decisive action to aid Chiang Kai-shek’s forces amid rising Communist pressure.

The Italian information agency Ari said Mindszenty, a cardinal serving life for treason in a Communist Hungary, was removed from Budapest prison due to aggravated threat illness. Ari offered no destination, earlier hinting at Russia, while Prague sources called the report nonsense.
Albert King, 56, of 1622 Forty second street NE, tried turning from Center Point road NE onto Thirty second street but missed the turn and crashed. His car slid off an embankment and wedged against a fence after hitting a clothes line. Judge William Matias fined King five dollars and costs for the incident.
Hazel Elizabeth Holsapple born January 6 1877 in Drakesville died in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a brief illness at 12 30 pm Monday. She moved from Davenport and belonged to First Presbyterian church and the Women's club. Surviving son Earl Holsapple Cedar Rapids daughter Edythe L Bernbach Chicago sister Mrs George Wright Drakesville three grandchildren and one great grandson. Services Tuesday in Turner chapel at 11 am conducted by Rev Allan Schoff burial Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call.
Samuel Fletcher Barcus aged 66 died Sunday in Los Angeles after a brief illness. Born June 4, 1883 in Des Moines he lived in Cedar Rapids since 1918 and had gone to California two months earlier. Survived by daughter Mrs Bruce Boland Cedar Rapids son Donald Barcus Denver brother Frank Barcus Grimes and two grandchildren. Services at Turner chapel with burial in Linwood cemetery.
Amelia C Hilman 74 of 834 Third Ave SE Cedar Rapids died at home Monday night after brief illness. Born May 13 1875 in Bloomer Wisconsin she was a member of the Episcopal church. She is survived by one sister Mrs Anna Malkin of Chippewa Falls. Services at Turner chapel 9 am Wednesday led by Rev D A Jerski rector of St Johns Episcopal church burial in Oak Hill cemetery friends may call at the chapel.
Mrs Mary Ellen Flaherty of 527 Avenue NW died Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 8 am Wednesday in St Patrick's Church with Rt Rev Msgr D J Lenihan presiding. Burial is planned at Corpus Christi Cemetery in Fort Dodge. Rosary will be recited by Msgr Lenihan at 7 30 pm Tuesday at Teahen chapel.
Mrs Calvin M Dresher of Belle Plaine died Sunday. Services will be in Turner chapel at 1 30 p m Wednesday with Rev R E Kearney of Alburnett officiating. Burial will be in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Harold B. Hage, of 825 Avenue NE, died Sunday. Services will be held in the Turner chapel at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. H. G. Schwegler of First Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Cemetery.
Services for Mrs Peter Mathes of Long Beach California former Tillie Blizek of Cedar Rapids and Oxford Junction will be conducted in the Lutheran church in Oxford Junction at 2 p m Wednesday.
About 15,000 United Mine Workers walked out in Illinois and Indiana in a wildcat strike. Union official Hugh White ordered Illinois miners to return to work by January 9 while John L. Lewis remained silent. Miners said the action was voluntary and aimed at better terms and a contract.
Pittsburgh report says most United Mine Workers back to work on Tuesday after a five day break. Full production allowed only at mines meeting 95 cent daily wage rise and 15 cent per ton welfare boost. Some operators feared renewed Thursday shutdown but large western Pennsylvania West Virginia and Ohio mines reported for duty.
Mrs. Carl Heinze of 3209 First Avenue East was treated for a minor head cut after her car backed from a driveway and collided with a car driven by Gene Zacek of 307 Twenty-seventh Street SE. She was transported by Ambulance Service to St Luke's Hospital and released after treatment.
An Iowa Industrial Traffic League will be formed in Cedar Rapids January 31. The organization will unite industrial traffic managers and Chamber of Commerce traffic heads to advocate on shipping rates and transportation issues. Herman Schroeder and Floyd Partridge from the Illinois Traffic League will advise. The project follows the 1929 disbanding of the original Iowa Traffic League and aims to present a unified stance on legislation affecting transport and industry.
A late winter storm blankets northwest Iowa with three to four inches of drifting snow on ice from freezing rain. Power lines, rail and road services suffer while schools close in Dickinson Emmet and Clay counties. Temperatures plunge including unofficial five below at Spirit Lake and Sioux City near minus three.
A five year old boy and an 84 year old man were injured in separate icy street accidents. Edward Bastian 5 suffered a forehead laceration and possible internal injuries after his sled struck a car on Forest Drive SE near Eastern Boulevard SE. Edward Fordyce 84 received facial abrasions after being hit at Park Court and First Avenue E. the driver E W Meyers 1522 Avenue NE was charged with failure to yield. The boy was treated at St Luke’s hospital and the man at Mercy hospital.
Vienna AP reports a gas explosion in a coal mine trapped at least several miners while officials say more than 100 other men escaped. Authorities describe fuel gas caused the blast and rescue teams worked at the scene.
Mary Rose Butler 45 pleaded guilty to forgery in district court. Judge Floyd Philbrick imposed six months in county jail with three months suspended starting Oct 12, release Jan 11, upon recommendation by County Attorney William Crissman. Butler, who has multiple aliases, faced a federal charge earlier for possession of altered money orders. The case revealed numerous bank accounts and 11 aliases along with five social security cards. She allegedly forged a $68.60 Merchants National Bank check payable to Madge Luce and signed D. M. Ross.
Clarence Beeson of Cedar Rapids was elected chairman of the Linn County board of supervisors for 1950. He succeeds Elmer Seeveil and will serve a rotating, annual chairmanship with term through Jan. 2, 1951. Henry Hood remains third district supervisor. 1950 actions include newspaper reappointments and county staff appointments.
Joe O Dell, 37, of 505 Fifth Avenue SE, pleaded guilty to drunk driving. District Judge Philbrick fined him 300 dollars plus costs after his New Year’s Eve arrest when his car crossed Fourth Street tracks and halted at the Milwaukee depot. He may pay 150 dollars and costs down and 25 dollars a month.
Mrs. Alger Hiss testified in her husband’s perjury trial that she never traveled with Mrs. Whittaker Chambers. She recalled Crosley visiting their home in 1935 36 and receiving a red rug from him, while the Ford roadster once owned by Hiss was given to Crosley.

In Des Moines a sprinkler system burst in Younkers department store on the third floor turning a beauty salon into a brief shower. Loretta, the salon manager, said a broken pipe caused the incident. About twenty firemen with buckets and mops cleared the water and appointments resumed within an hour.

Six petitioners urged the city council to restrict parking in the 900 block of Second Street SW. National Labor Relations Board hearing on a union representation election at Cherry Burrell Corp in Grand Rapids has been postponed to January 11. The vote request came from Cherry Burrell employees seeking an election to determine union representation at the plant.
Des Moines reports the fourth Democrat, W. M. Shaw of Newton, has filed for nomination papers to seek the party’s U S senate seat held by Bourke Hickenlooper. He competes with Gene Poston Ernest Seamann and Alvin Meyers for the nomination.

Police charged driver Darrell Dake of 409 avenue NW with failing to have his car under control.
SPRINGVILLE Milan Hood 18 son of Mr and Mrs Henry Hood of near Springville is recovering at home from injuries in an auto crash New Year's Eve. His father Linn County Third district supervisor. Hood suffered a fractured left leg when the car he was driving in fog missed a curve three miles west of Waubeek about 8 p.m. Saturday. He hobbled a quarter mile for help and collapsed at a farmhouse doorway.
In Des Moines the Veterans Memorial Auditorium faces a cost rise to about 5.37 million dollars from 2.75 million. Architects say the plan now includes seating for 14 000 and ice-making equipment for hockey, pending voter approval of an additional bond.
