War mobilization prompts farm labor clarity in 1940s
Harry Boyd argues selective service must specify 18 to 25 year old agricultural deferments to sustain farm output. He urges precise guidance from Washington on 4-Fs and job reshuffles, warning vague talk could undermine the war program while stressing home front effort and allied diplomacy.
Byrnes Seeks Wider Draft Among Farm Deferrals
The War Mobilization director urged Selective Service to press the 18 through 25 age group holding farm deferments to serve, citing 364,000 men in that bracket. He said agriculture can be run by older workers and that the president authorized drawing upon this reservoir of potential fighters. Brig. Gen. Grahl in Des Moines noted local boards have been reevaluating agricultural deferments and inducting some 18 to 25 year olds where farming continuity is not disrupted.
