Long Gone author recalls Iowa farm life from Marengo
Terry McCoy profiles Richard Willis, Iowa native and author of the memoir Long Gone. Willis grew up on a small Marengo farm between 1933 and 1945, hated farming, and later moved to New York City where he turned to writing and acting. The book details husking corn milking cows and other farm life, preserving memories before corporate farming erased the era. Willis and his Brooklyn-born wife Linda Barry discuss cultural contrasts and the enduring pull of youth on his work.
