Vietnam Veteran Kills Brother Then Himself
Two Vietnam veterans, Curtis Youngbear Jr 26 and Victor Youngbear 22, died in a New Year shooting on the Mesquakie Indian settlement in Tama County. Curtis shot Victor with a .22 rifle at their mother's home, then killed himself after threatening Victor's wife. Authorities note unclear motive while noting family military service and a prior fatality. The brothers had recent divorces and marriages. one brother died in Vietnam in 1966. Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Co. unveiled a four year plan costing 11.316 million dollars for the Iowa City area. Four Die In East Clarion Two-Car Crash
A two-car collision east of Clarion killed four people including Doris Schroeder 40 of Rowan and her nephew Leslie Studer 12 of Eagle Grove. The driver of the other car, Donald Ellsworth Williams 24 of Boone, also died. Schroeder's son Douglas 12, a passenger, died next day in Des Moines hospital.
