Chicago market notes show Saturday receipts of 100 cattle 100 hogs 100 sheep. Hog prices eased up to 25 cents with steady slaughter cattle, estimates from AP and UPI list varying bids for 200 to 280 pound hogs and 800 to 1 421 pound cattle. Sheep receipts limited with lamb prices in the 18 to 19 dollar range.
In New York motor shares led gains as stocks advanced to new highs. Trading volume was about 3.1 million shares, with Cuban sugar stocks and other island republic issues showing overall strength.
Cedar Rapids prices on the hog market were a quarter lower Friday for good No 2 butchers and sows plant delivered. Meaty No 1 high yielding hogs were 50 cents above the quotations while No 3 overfats were 50 cents below. Grain oats 58 cents per bushel. beans 82 07 per unit.
Sioux City market reports cattle receipts 1,500 with calves 200. All cattle prices steady. High and choice slaughter steers 28.00 to 28.50. High choice and choice and prime 28.50. Good steers 25.50 to 27.00. Good and choice heifers 25.50 to 27.00.
The syndicate that owns the yacht Sceptre, the unsuccessful British challenger in September's America's Cup races, announced it would be put up for sale on Friday.

Potatoes arrivals total 109 with shipments for Wednesday and Thursday, russets around 33,600 pounds and near 4,000 pounds for other varieties.

Des Moines reports Friday receipts at 85 000 and weekly totals 86 000 with prices for barrows, gilts, and sows across weight ranges and several price points. Mexico's ambassador to Guatemala was ordered to file a formal protest after Guatemalan planes machine gunned three Mexican fishing boats in Guatemalan waters. Guatemalan President Fuentes accused foreign boats of illegal fishing, prompting a border alert.
The comptroller of the currency called on all national banks to submit their condition statements as of December 31. The Federal Reserve Board and the FDIC issued similar calls for member banks. Iowa Banking Supt. Joe Gronstal also ordered state banks to report their year end condition as of Dec. 31.

Martin Wiley, 58, named Friday by Linn county supervisors as chairman for 1959 his final year on the three member board Wiley will end his term to make way for Anthony Scolaro of Cedar Rapids who takes office next January Wiley appointed in 1951 to fill a vacancy re elected twice and also served as chairman in 1956 He farms fruit west of Cedar Rapids on highway 74 The board designated Miles P Sutera and Dudley Henderson as colleagues and set depository limits for county offices noting most banks carry less than maximum figures The supervisors also named four newspapers as official county papers for 1959 The Cedar Rapids Gazette Marion Sentinel Mt Vernon Hawkeye Record and Central City News Letter
Three Linn county officials started new posts as the year began. Judge W Sandee Jordan became a district judge joining Floyd Philbrick Charles Penningroth and B J Maxwell. Melvin McCalley became Linn county district court clerk. Dr Richard Navratil won the county coroner seat defeating L J Burianek.
The Iowa Supreme Court affirms a Linn County ruling in favor of Highway Equipment Co. against Jack Stafford Trucking Co. The suit seeks 4 685.04 dollars for equipment purchased, while Stafford countersues for 5 000 over alleged defect, and 6 900 for wrongful attachment. The lower court ruling dismissing that portion of the counterclaim was upheld.
Linn county set 16 depositories for 1959 funds by the board of supervisors. County treasurer deposits authorized include Merchants National Bank 4 million, Peoples Bank and Trust 244 million, Guarantee Bank and Trust 2 million, First Trust and Savings 500 thousand, First National and Farmers State Marion 300 thousand each, United State Bank 200 thousand, Lisbon Bank and Trust 150 thousand, City National City State Bank Central City Mt Vernon Bank and Trust Linn County State Bank Coggan 100 thousand each, Walker State Bank 75 thousand.
A 19-year-old Homestead resident, Thomas E. Ealy, pled guilty to a false check, passing a $20.07 instrument on Dec 23 in a Cedar Rapids store. He must restitution for five false checks totaling $60 by Feb 1. Also, Frank Borst sues William and Fern Lee for $257.75 rent at 140144 Second St SE. Household Finance wins $346.82 against James and Mary Burr on a promissory note.
A New Year prank on a San Carlos reservation left two dead and eight injured after lighted dynamite sticks were tossed from a wooden frame house. Deb Hinton, 27, and her brother were killed when a stick ignited a box of dynamite. Police and Indian bureau investigator Mike Windham described the chaotic scene and the critical injuries among partygoers.
In New Haven AP report a six year old boy named Paul fell through ice on a frozen pond while with a playmate. His coat caught the edge and kept him immersed for ten minutes before the father, who was visiting the boy’s home, pulled him to safety. The child survived unharmed aside from the cold.
French tourists celebrating New Year’s Eve attached a steel cable to the base of the Pisa tower and their car. They accelerated causing the car to move in two directions while the tower remained unmoved, prompting questions about the incident.
The DeMolay chapter plans a public installation at the Masonic temple this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. George Hess will receive a Chevalier degree for outstanding DeMolay work. Officers listed include Tom Stelzer as master councilor and Alan Randall as junior officer.
British commuters staged an uncomplaining revolt on a train bound for Dagenham East. Halfway there they refused to change cars and insisted on going to the stated destination. The conductor capitulated, leaving officials astonished at the passengers’ assertive action.
London reports that Britain’s fold and dollar reserves fell by 145 million dollars in December, the first decline in 15 months. Treasury data show reserves at 1,096 million pounds (3,069 million dollars) on December 31, with the weaker reserve posture aiding the move toward partial convertibility of the pound.
A second illegal nighttime shooting in two weeks is under investigation by Delaware county officers. The Ed Fischer and Donald Donahue farms southeast of Manchester were struck with pellets damaging Christmas decorations and windows. Earlier, the Frank Fangman home near Thorpe was damaged by shotgun blasts, chased by Fangman’s son Bernard before the culprits escaped. Police have not confirmed if hunting rabbits at night is involved.
A young couple Eugene Maddell and his wife, with their 7 week old baby daughter, escaped unharmed from a Coralville trailer fire at about 2 30 a m Friday. An oil stove is believed to have caused the blaze. All belongings were destroyed and the Maddells, aged 19 and 20, are staying with relatives.
