In Chicago police report the 1934 gang war claimed its first fatality as Michael Walsh a 29 year old race bookmaker was shot fatally by three masked gunmen who entered his home. Walsh could not identify his assailants and said he knew of no motive. Police questioned Frank Newburg, a former partner of Walsh in a betting office.
An earthquake struck Biarritz at 5 a.m. Monday, shaking houses and driving residents into the streets. No injuries or damage were reported, though seas were rough and tides high, hindering ships from entering Bayonne and St. Jean de Luz ports.

Chicago report states a prosecuting physician will head the case against Dr. Alice Wynekoop for the murder of Rheta Wynekoop. Dr. William D. McNally, a former coroner's chemist, is hired to direct the prosecution in what is described as a bitter medical battle. Rheta was found dead on an operating table with a bullet wound and chloroform masks nearby. Wynekoop claimed Rheta died from chloroform during treatment and that she fired to cover up a mistake. The state contends Rheta was alive when shot.
In Chicago at St Elizabeth's hospital an 8-pound boy, son of Mr and Mrs Edward Schreiber, arrived just half a second after midnight to become the city's first 1934 baby. The Kunde infant arrived 15 seconds after and was delivered by Caesarean section, while the Schreibers' child.
