Eastern Iowans headed into 1985 after a day of freezing rain sleet and snow that coated roads and caused numerous accidents. A three vehicle crash near Belle Plaine injured four people as many motorists slid off Interstate 80 and snowdrifts persisted through Wednesday with bitter cold.

First liver transplant performed at University Hospitals Iowa City
A 31 year old Dallas woman became the first liver transplant patient at University Hospitals in Iowa City. The donor was a 22 year old Buffalo man who died of a brain hemorrhage. Dr Dai Nghiem oversaw donor liver transport from Buffalo to Iowa City despite weather delays.
