A twin engine Cessna crashed in a farm field west of North Liberty killing Dr. Gilbert Journell Cuthbertson and Dr. Megan Celia Danton both aged 31 and Brian R. Olson 32. A third man forged prescriptions in Des Moines then left town. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners warns pharmacists and authorities seek a permanent injunction against Noland. The system has loopholes and counterfeit forms are easy to print leading to more violations.

A Justice Department survey of more than 13 000 inmates in local jails on June 30 1983 shows over 25 percent drank the equivalent of 20 beers or 13 mixed drinks before arrest and another 25 percent drank at least 12 beers or eight mixed drinks. The study notes a 200 percent rise in DUI arrests since 1970 to 1.8 million in 1986 and reports a typical five month jail term with longer sentences for repeat offenders. Most offenders were male and unmarried. 21 year olds had the highest arrest rate.
