Cedar Rapids Athletes Lead Five to State Titles in Iowa Meet
Special Citations HESE five Cedar Rapids athletes achieved the goal for which all Iowa preps strive state championships. Wash swimmers Ben Taylor and John Little led the Warriors to their ninth straight state championship. Taylor repeated as champ in the 200-yard individual medley with a record time and also won the 100-yard butterfly for a second time. Little, who shaved his head for the meet, won the 200 freestyle in 1:49.53. The two then swam the final legs on the record-setting 400-yard relay team. Kennedy diver Stoney Turley piled up 416.10 points to cap a brilliant season with a state crown. He beat his nearest competitor by almost 20 points. In wrestling, 98-pound Mike Gallagher and 126-pound Brad Suma brought home AAA titles for Jeff. Gallagher had to beat an old nemesis, Clinton's Tom Hinrichsen, 6-1 in overtime for his championship. The victory avenged his only loss in a 29-1 season. Suma was one of only two area grapplers to finish the season unbeaten. The one time he didn't win in 29 outings was when he tied a Dubuque wrestler at 132 pounds. Suma won his finale 11-9 over Ft. Dodge's Joe Zuspann. fac trestier MIKE GALLAGHER
