Elkader legislator mentors Iowa teens through statehouse visits
Sen. Dale Tieden of Elkader has invited northeastern Iowa high school students to Des Moines for weeklong internships since 1980s, covering transport and housing. Teens attend meetings, work on projects, and gain government exposure as pages, with support from community groups like the Waukon Commercial Club. He notes the distance from his district makes such visits valuable and continues hosting Senate pages and hosting athletic teams for dinners.
