Industry urged to broaden trade with the Soviet Union
Washington officials urged a sustained effort by American industry to expand trade with the Soviet Union beyond marginal levels. William Casey said U S businessmen have begun exploring opportunities after a three year trade pact signed last October, but U S trade lags behind Europe. Top officials argued for public acceptance and cooperation to secure broader ties, noting MFN status could modestly ease duties while more work continues. If MFN is granted, projections estimate Soviet exports to the United States around 1.5 billion and American exports to the Soviet Union around 2.5 billion by 1980.
