Ray signals possible veto on judicial reform bill
DES MOINES The Iowa House plan to keep justice of the peace courts in the state system drew Gov. Robert Ray’s ire at a Monday news conference. He warned it could mislead the public into thinking real court reform is occurring. He suggested he might veto the bill if sent in its House form, while preferring the Senate version that preserves municipal courts but drops justice and police courts. The unified court proposal was among Ray’s 25 legislative program items, which he said he is disappointed the House will not salvage some elements of.

E TV Expansion Voted by House
DES MOINES First move toward extending Iowa educational television to the 35 percent of people not now receiving it was taken by the Iowa house Monday. The house voted 86 to 4 to start a 92.4 million three year program to extend the system to northeast and northwest Iowa by June 90, 1973 with about 400,000 set aside for each region. The bill’s priorities would spend 800,000 in 1978 74 for southwest Iowa and 800,000 in 1974 75 for north central Iowa. It was noted a future legislature cannot bind its successor but priorities were deemed necessary.

Six Story Fall Kills Worker On Roosevelt Hotel Fire Escape
A Marion man, Edward Vesey, 1705 Valley View Drive, a field supervisor for Paulson Construction, fell six stories from a ninth floor fire escape at the Roosevelt hotel while officials say he lost his balance during cutting work. He died en route to St Luke’s hospital after 9:40 this morning. Rescuers faced access delays as a ladder had to be brought to reach the roof and the body was removed via the fourth floor to the parking ramp. In a separate incident, an electrical malfunction destroyed the sign at First National Bank drive-in facility Saturday night, with fire fighters extinguishing the blaze in about 18 minutes.
