Former southwest Iowa man First Sgt. Brad Kasal is reportedly under consideration for the Medal of Honor for a Fallujah rescue. Kasal, 38, formerly of Afton, is recovering at home in California after learning three Marines were wounded inside an insurgent house during house-to-house fighting on November 13.
Kasai led Marines into a burning house to rescue wounded soldiers. He was shot seven times and sustained extensive shrapnel injuries while bearing a wounded Marine to shield him from a grenade. He also killed an enemy fighter at close range.
Cliff Missen leads the eGranary Digital Library at Iowa University to load digitized arts and sciences documents onto hard drives for African universities. WiderNet technician Peter Yohe has trained African staff and carried eGranary disks capable of storing millions of documents to expand access.
In Cedar Rapids 15 elementary and two middle schools rank in the bottom half of Iowa schools by composite scores with two elementaries in the bottom 10 percent. In Iowa City four elementary schools are in the bottom half with one in the bottom tier. Composite scores rise in Cedar Rapids across 12 of 22 elementary schools four of six middle schools and one of three high schools. In Iowa City 10 of 17 elementary schools show gains while three stay unchanged and junior highs both decline with one of two high schools down. Fourth grade reading and math scores rise in 25 of 43 Eastern Iowa districts surveyed by The Gazette.
