Cedar Rapids city says it has tentatively settled a three year contract with Local 238 representing 22 police and fire dispatchers and reached tentative deals with 15 airport safety employees. Wage increases range from 3.0 to 3.5 percent over three years.
Defense lawyers for murder suspect Jonathan Memmer were approved to hire Jerald Smithey of Smithey Investigations in Iowa City as a private investigator at state expense. Judge David Remley set pay at 50 dollars per hour, up to 2000 dollars, with Erdahl out of town and Brown not commenting. The team also includes Erdahl and Brown, paid 55 dollars per hour, in the Class A felony case involving Maria Lehner and Laura Ann Dalton, killed in March 1999 and the evidence hidden in an Iowa City apartment fire.
