Iowan Historian Reveals 23rd Iowa in Civil War Battle
Ames AP profiles Dick Barton 73 who chronicles the 23rd Iowa Infantry at Big Black River in 1863. His research covers private Lemuel Carlson and others, the charge led by William Kinsman, and the unit’s heavy losses for a Union victory on the way to Vicksburg. Barton, a former newspaper owner, aims to publish a full Iowa 23rd history.
