Authorities search for a hooded man who robbed Norwest Bank at 340 Seventh Ave in Marion just before 5 PM. He used profanity, had his hand in a pocket, and fled toward Eighth Avenue amid rush hour. no injuries reported after interviewing more than a dozen employees and customers.
Kimmi Hardy 36 is charged with first degree murder in the Aug 28 death of Theresa Lund. Prosecutors say Hardy shot Lund twice, hid the body in a basement crawl space, and claimed Lund’s six week old son Paul as her own. Witnesses described Hardy’s gun use and a pattern of lies including fake pregnancies.
Linn-Mar voters approved a $25 million bond issue to expand school facilities in Marion while another ballot question to raise the bonding limit fell short at 59.3 percent. Officials say construction can begin within the current limit and the district may spend up to $14 million before reaching it.
Senate opposition from Rep. Robert Torricelli defeats the Republican drafted balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. The New Jersey Democrat joins 34 Democrats in voting against. President Clinton welcomed the decision as the fight continues for a 67 vote hurdle next week.
Luther College President Jeffrey Baker blocked the hiring of a lesbian Buddhist woman for the religion department citing the department's "special responsibility" to students and the Luther community. Judge of the department head John Lieber questioned the meaning of that responsibility amid campus hiring debates.
