Local Carrier Jim Hanson Keeps Coin Hobby Alive

Gazette Carrier James Hanson, 15, collects coins as his chief hobby. He has about 500 American coins including an 1838 large cent and an 1856 half dollar. Hanson delivers The Gazette to 81 readers on Fourth and Sixth streets NW and began on January 6, 1957. He attends St Pat’s as a sophomore and saves earnings for college, living with his aunt and uncle at 1525 Sixth Street NW.

Halt UR MEN Appointed Firemen by Cedar Rapids City Council

The Cedar Rapids City Council appointed Halt UR MEN as firemen from a civil service eligible list with start dates March 2 to March 4. The council approved rezoning at 6 Avenue and Center Point Road NE from R-32 to B-1 with conditions, while Safety Commissioner Johnson dissented. The Riverfront Improvement Commission sought permission to cut curb for 32 feet of new entrances to its garage at 2021 Ellis Blvd NW, referred to public safety and engineering. The council also rescinded a prior 15 minute parking resolution on the north side of Twelfth Avenue SE, and R. E. Holdeman sought curb cuts between 289 Ray Drive and 291 Jacolyn Drive NW for drainage, referred to city engineering.

Yuri Suhl, novelist and humorist born in Poland in 1908, speaks Sunday at 1 p.m. in Temple Judah Cedar Rapids on Jewish humor. The Sisterhood sponsors the event. Suhl authored One Foot in America Cowboy on a Wooden Horse and a forthcoming Ernestine Rose biography. He came to the U S at 15 and wrote WWII radio skits, taught languages for the army morale department.
