Cedar Rapids health officials issued a warning to owners of backyard incinerators. Assistant Health Officer Carl Smith urged keeping burning areas neat and legal to avoid police action. Household burning of waste paper is allowed, but no cans, bottles, cloth, or debris should be burned.
Prince David Mdivani 48 tells police the missing persons report is silly after returning home from Paso Robles. Virginia Mdivani, adopted daughter of oilman Harry Sinclair, filed the report when he failed to return on schedule from a business trip.
Mrs Joseph Erger 73 of 1500 Hinkley Avenue NW Cedar Rapids died Monday in a Cedar Rapids hospital. Born in Dahnen Germany on March 7 1877 she immigrated to Iowa in 1892 lived in Newhall before moving to Cedar Rapids. She was a member of St Pauls Catholic Church and Altar Rosary Society. Survived by her husband Joseph Erger six daughters and three sons and two sisters. Funeral 10 a.m. Thursday at St Pauls Newhall burial St Michaels Norway.
Services for Lewis Wilson Estes aged long illness death will be conducted at the Christian church in Bible Grove Missouri Wednesday at 2 p.m. Burial follows at Bible Grove cemetery. Friends may call at Turner chapel until 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Mrs. Elver O Fisk of 114 E Avenue NW dies Sunday and services will be held at Turner chapel at 1 30 p m Wednesday with Rev Frank H Ward presiding. Burial follows in Linwood cemetery and friends may call at the chapel.
Mrs. Mary Lettie Baum of 1133 Ninth Street NW died Sunday. Services will be held at Beatty chapel at 1 30 p m Wednesday with burial in Riverside cemetery Anamosa. Friends may call at the chapel.
Three Cedar Falls residents died in a car-truck crash near Dorchester Nebraska on U.S. 6. M. P. Jensen 60 Alice Jensen Asmus 33 and her six year old daughter Mary Jane Asmus were killed. James W. Johnson 33 of South Connellsville Pa drove the truck and was uninjured. The car was reportedly parked on the highway when hit. Jensen died instantly. Alice Asmus died en route to Milford and Mary Jane died at a Milford doctor’s office.
A Dallas man was ordered under a $50,000 peace bond to stop striking his wife with a sledgehammer. In Justice W E Richburg's court he said the blows came when the weather turned bad claiming his wife is cranky. The wife remains hospitalized with head injuries and the judge warned of harsher penalties if violence recurs.
Announcement lists two army enlistments Clayton L Lowe and Wayne J Clemenson who went to Fort Riley for four and three years respectively. Navy orders include J R Henningsen to active duty on PCE 880 training ship in Michigan City and R R Breidert to Boston training cruise. Plus ten naval reserve seamen recruits and six transfers from inactive reserve to the organized unit with Des Moines and Iowa references.
James Harford, 12, of Cedar Rapids learns of George Carter’s lost dog Brownie from The Gazette. He offers to send a replacement puppy and plans to cover shipping, while another dog is already en route to George. James, a Roosevelt sixth grader and newspaper carrier, lives with his parents at 413 K Avenue NW.
President Truman told paratroopers of the 82nd airborne at Fort Bragg he has long wanted to jump from an airplane. He recalled visiting the base as a senator in 1943 or 1944 and almost jumping before he was deterred by a major general who warned of court martial. He said he still hopes to do it someday.
Hollywood actress Myrna Loy and deputy assistant secretary of state Howland H. Sargeant plan a May or June wedding. Friends say the romance grew during her work at the state department on U N ECOSOC matters. The marriage would be Loy's fourth.

A Linn county clinic for school bus drivers and board members scheduled for Tuesday was postponed indefinitely due to illness of a state transportation representative. Sessions were to be at the Marion rural independent school. An account suit Birdsall Tire Service versus Bee Line Transit Company was dismissed on motion of the plaintiff.
In Lawrence Massachusetts a hen laid an unusually large egg weighing eight and a half ounces. Dr Henry F Dearborn measured it at ten inches in length and eight and a half inches around the middle before the bird died shortly afterward.
City and county employees in Cedar Rapids will gather at 8 p.m. in the superior courtroom of city hall to study proposed changes in old age and survivors insurance bills before the state legislature. The meeting aims to form a local opinion on measures affecting the 4 percent monthly deduction and benefit qualifications after 10 years.
Eight Puerto Rican nationalists faced possible 35 years in prison after their conviction on charges linked to destroying a U S post office in Jayuya during the abortive Puerto Rican revolt. The defendants include Elio and Blanca Torresola, kin of Griselio Torresola who was fatally shot while trying to assassinate President Truman.
