University historian Daniel Boorstin testified before the House committee that he joined a Oxford Rhodes scholar group in 1936 37 and Harvard in 1939 becoming an anti communist later. He disclosed other figures and explained motives for joining the Communist group amid debates on leftist influence in education.

A suit by Dr Mor igan J Foster of Cedar Rapids against Henry Specht of Maquo keta over injuries from an auto crash on February 19 1952 was settled out of court Wednesday in district court.

AMES Iowa AP The Iowa Highway Commission said on Thursday that a shortage of funds prevents it from awarding any more primary road construction contracts except for emergency work before the next funding period.

Army and Navy recruiting offices announced two enlistments on Thursday. Joseph M. Tuttle, 19, of Monticello, joined the Navy and will report for recruit training at the San Diego Naval Training Center. Ores A. Knuteen, 17, of Tipton, has enlisted in the Army and was sent to Camp Crowder, Missouri, for further processing.
The City Clerk issued permits to Alfred Welper of 1493 Sixth Avenue to remodel an apartment for 200 dollars and to Mike Cira of 840 Seventh Avenue to enclose a porch for 500 dollars.
Reported by Cedar Rapids wholesalers says at least three major tobacco firms have announced price hikes of one cent per pack as lifting controls prompts higher costs. Local prices in Cedar Rapids run around 21 to 22 cents a pack, with Des Moines averaging higher. Retailers are expected to pass increases to customers soon after wholesale changes.
Nine persons were injured in a four car crash nine miles northeast of Des Moines on highway 64 as three cars carried people home from the girls basketball state tournament. Two 15 year olds Nancy Kohler and Fabedia Clements remained hospitalized with cuts and bruises. others were treated and released. Vehicles were driven by Gail Gardner 19 Maxwell Earl Roe Hubbard Marvin Barentin 25 Bennett and Raymond Dunshee 43 Colo. Barentin stopped to inspect after a rear impact from Dunshee's car.
Berlin AP report says an Eat Gere dairy owner fled to West Berlin with 17 cows, two wagons and furniture, crossing the city boundary at his home street. He hoped the border would keep authorities from noticing as he feared a Communist crackdown.
