City and county officials met to review the two month operation of Cedar Rapids municipal court. They discussed staffing, court resources, and suggestions including a set of Iowa code books for the judges and improved access to offices.
The United States instructed Communist Poland to close its consulates general in New York Chicago and Detroit saying the establishments serve no useful purpose in current U S Polish relations amid complaints from Michigan lawmakers that the Detroit office spread Communist propaganda.
Ronald E. Augustine filed for a Cedar Rapids school board seat in the March 8 election, joining four others in a four three year term field. Everett C. Pratt announced candidacy for treasurer, a non salaried post rotated among Cedar Rapids bank reps. Pratt is cashier at Merchants National Bank for a two year term.
Army Secretary Stevens vents anger over interpretations of his agreement with Sen. McCarthy. White House and Stevens deny calls for Eisenhower support or resignation. Reports suggest two possible paths: Eisenhower backing Stevens or a public statement of full agreement, amid concerns over morale and a possible Capitol showdown on TV.
Reporter Harmon Kallman describes southeastern Colorado dust storm activity stretching mile after mile of buried fences and wind-sculpted sands. Farmers compare the scene to the Dust Bowl era as moisture helps stubborn green wheat survive amid drifting debris and hedgerow weeds.
Henry J. Hood, 68, Springville farmer and chairman of the Linn County board of supervisors, announced his candidacy for a third three year term on the Democratic ticket. Hood has served since 1949 and represents the Third district including Boulder to Washington townships.
A 15 year old from Iowa City assisted officials in locating the driver after a wreck on highway 30 near Mt Vernon. He is held on a car theft charge and will be turned over to juvenile authorities. The stolen car belonged to John R. McNeish of Iowa City and was found wrecked after rolling several times.
Minnie Dement reports a burglary in Zanesville Ohio where burglars entered her house and stole about five dollars worth of food from the refrigerator leaving other items untouched.
Forecasters were surprised by a Thursday snowstorm as geese entered Iowa from the south. The State Conservation Commission warned peak migration may come slightly earlier than March 15 due to warm weather. Rural scenes included blocked Cedar Rapids hills and a Good Samaritan wrecker aiding stalled motorists.
President Eisenhower announced the United States will provide military aid to Pakistan as part of deterring Communist aggression. He said aid amounts will be set by a special mission and stressed the offer is not directed at India. He pledged action if aid is misused and noted sympathy for India if similar aid is requested.
Vatican report says the pontiff remains seriously ill but shows slight improvement as he enters the second month of illness.
A snowstorm crossed Iowa Thursday dropping up to 18 inches of snow. The storm disrupted transportation yet drew muted concern as it broke winter dryness affecting trees and crops. State geologist Garland Hershey cautioned the moisture may help ponds and stream flow but likely won’t fully replenish soil moisture or water tables. Agricultural statistician S J Gilbert called the snowfall a Godsend.
Public Improvements Commissioner W. W. Stolba asked Cedar Rapids residents to avoid parking on residential streets Thursday night to allow snow plows to operate. City plows will also be in the business district and the downtown 2 a.m. parking ban will be enforced.
