Weather forecast for Monday through Thursday shows mostly cloudy skies with occasional snow flurries. Highs near 28 to 29 and lows around 14. Record includes divorce decree, marriage licenses, court entries, fire calls, and multiple local notices.
In Des Moines Iowa the anti closed shop bill and four other measures to restrain labor unions reached the Iowa senate without recommendation from the labor committee after a row in which Senator Frank Martin refused to preside. The senate killed a Bankers Association bill to allow all banks with director and state banking department approval to five day business. The senate sent to the house a joint resolution authorizing 25000 to a state council of 10 members to study building code statutes and ordinances to draft a uniform code for postwar construction.
Five enlistments reported by the army office in the Federal Building include Cedar Rapids men John G. Zimerman LeRoy T. Wolfe and James A. Atwood who will go to Ft. Omaha Nebraska. Also listed are Edward H. Heim of Dubuque and George J. Birkett of Galena Illinois.
G. W. Thode of Waterloo died on a Rock Island train upon arrival at Davenport station about 8 30 a m Tuesday. Death was due to a heart attack. Thode had been in Phoenix Arizona and was accompanied by a nurse. An ambulance from Waterloo waited at the station to take him home.
Aboard the ice breaker Burton Island the 197 expedition crew departs Little America IV in the Ross Sea after five weeks of exploration. Rear Admiral Cruzen and Byrd oversee the evacuation to avoid thickening ice, leaving the tent city behind with Byrd noting the site was peaceful and deserves better than to be vandalized.
Keith Ehlers aged 19 of 218 Eighth Street NE was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle. He was ordered to plead by Friday at 10 a.m. in county court and is held on a $3,500 bond. The arrest followed Wilder’s car theft claim near First Avenue and Eighth Street East. officers spotted the vehicle at Twin Towers before Ehlers allegedly fled and was later arrested. Sandee Jordan appointed as counsel.
Quaker Oats negotiations collapse as Cedar Rapids plant faces a potential strike. Union leaders say workers at five other plants are bound by no strike clauses, while scattered contracts at Akron Memphis St Joseph Peterborough Depew expire or lack renewal.
T. A. M. Craven, vice-president of Cowles Broadcasting, proposed a 1,530 foot tower for KRNT FM in Des Moines to expand frequency modulation broadcasts to Iowa. He said an FCC application had been filed for approval to build the structure taller than the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building.
Col. Stewart, long associated with Standard Oil of Indiana, died after a storied career as attorney general, board chairman, and public advocate for big business. He helped expand the company from 167 million to 1 billion dollars, instituted an employee stock plan, and served as Hughes County state attorney and state senator in South Dakota during early 20th century years. He also led the South Dakota National Guard, served with the Rough Riders in the Spanish American War, and married twice with two sets of sons.
Norbert Hughson of 508 Oakland avenue NE suffered a compound fracture of the left leg and a scalp laceration in an accident at National Oats Company Tuesday morning. He was taken by ambulance to St Luke's hospital after his leg was caught in a rope and he was pulled upward on a pulley.
Harvey James Bishop 61 of 1018 Tenth street died in a local hospital at 9 40 p m Monday after a brief illness. Born August 14 1885 in Hazelton he wrote 2000 verses in 35 years and had songs published. Survived by wife Florence Weeks a son and four daughters seven grandchildren a sister and a brother. Services Thursday at Beatty chapel with burial in Aurora cemetery.
Herman Chris Ahrens a Cedar Rapids service representative of the Iowa Manufacturing Company for over 20 years died suddenly at 2 a.m. Tuesday near Decatur Alabama while en route to Cedar Rapids. Born March 4 1879 in Germany he came to Cedar Rapids from Wheatland in 1905. Surviving are his wife Lena E a daughter Bernadine and two sisters Emma Schroecer and Kate Krenz. He held membership in Crescent lodge 25 A F and A M Iowa Consistory and El Kabir Shrine. Burial will be Cedar Memorial cemetery with arrangements to be announced.
Mrs Myrtle A Gibson aged 77 of 1831 Ellis Blvd NW Cedar Rapids died at home at 6:00 am Tuesday after a lingering illness She was born February 15 1870 in Anamosa She survived by three daughters Irene Fry Hazel Hoffman Florence Mueller a son James Gibson two sisters and two brothers Services by Rev Frank Ward at 2:30 pm Thursday Brady mortuary burial in Oak Hill Cemetery Friends may call at the mortuary Wednesday.
Anthony Kovar 82 of 626 Tenth avenue SE Cedar Rapids died at 6 15 p m Monday after a long illness in a local hospital Born in Czechoslovakia March 4 1865 he worked for Wilson and company until retiring 21 years ago Survived by wife Mary three children Mrs R W McLeod Sylvia and Lumir all of Cedar Rapids five grandchildren and three great grandchildren He was a member of A O U W No 278 Services at Janeba funeral home at 2 30 p m Thursday with Rev Zdenek F Pauk Burial in Bohemian National Cemetery Friends may call at the funeral home.
Steven Archer Johnston eleven month old son of Mr and Mrs R S Johnston 2120 Greenwood drive SE died in a local hospital Saturday Memorial services were conducted in St Pauls church Sunday at 3 30 p m by the Rev Marvin B Kober.
Mrs. Ernest Weeks 65 of 1029 Fourth avenue SE died at home about 8 p.m. Monday after several months illness. A lifelong Coggon resident, she moved to Cedar Rapids recently. Survived by husband, a daughter Mrs Dorothy Bascom of Cedar Rapids, and two sisters Mrs May LeClere of Chillicothe.
The service for Mo and Mrs. Cora Swisher of Peoria Illinois was held at Coggon Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Coggon with surviving relatives including a brother Lynn Savage of Coggon and a grandson.
In a case tied to the 13th Amendment anti-slavery statutes, Alfred Ingalls and his wife Elizabeth were arrested in Coronado on charges relating to Dora L. Jones who allegedly endured 40 years of unpaid forced labor beginning in 1905 after meeting Miss Jones in Washington.
Two mid dle-aged women, Catherine Bowcott aged 62 and Edna Woodcock aged 44, were convicted on eight mail fraud counts by an all-woman federal jury in Peoria Illinois. Prosecutors said hundreds of central Illinois residents lost over 300000. The jury deliberated about thirty minutes. Judge Adair raised bonds to 6000 after a motion for a new trial. The defendants face up to five years in prison and a 1000 dollar fine on each count.
British actor Herbert Marshall announced Aug 1 as the date for his fourth wedding. He will wed Boots Mallory in Santa Barbara California, five days after her divorce from movie producer Cagney becomes final.

Calvin Greene, a prominent Cedar Rapids figure on the Board of Trade and Linn County Historical Association, died aged 99. A motor vehicle safety bill would require Iowa drivers to have their cars inspected every six months by the state department of public safety. Other measures filed in the House include licensing and censorship of motion pictures, and limits on child labor in school hours and in manufacturing, construction, and demolition work.
A. F. Whitney president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen told the House labor committee that last year’s two day railroad walkout was only delayed and remains unresolved. He urged reliance on mediation and conciliation and blamed the National Mediation Board for pressuring unions to withdraw demands on working rules.
