Corning ends bid for Iowa GOP gubernatorial nomination

Lt. Gov Joy Corning withdraws from the Iowa Republican race after four months and about 100000 dollars of her own money. She says time constraints blocked campaign buildup, leaving Jim Lightfoot David Oman and Paul Pate as remaining contenders with Corning supporters estimated at about 12 percent of likely GOP voters.

Changes clarify motorist proof-of-insurance law

Gazette Des Moines reports Iowa lawmakers act to fix enforcement issues in the proof-of-insurance rule. The House Commerce Committee approved a 20-0 measure setting a $100 penalty for violations unless voters raise the simple misdemeanor cap to $1,000 in November. If approved, penalties rise to $250 for driving without coverage and $500 if an accident occurs. Representative Clyde Bradley notes the bill resolves enforcement questions, though it may not settle lawmen’s desire to use the law.
