A severe storm coated eastern Iowa with up to ten inches of snow and strong winds, halting activity. Schools closed across the region while road crews cleared main routes, facing limited visibility from blowing snow and gusts up to 35 mph.
Snowstorm drives four to ten inches of new snow across the area with drifts up to five feet. Government offices and many businesses shut. police, fire and public works workers manned the streets while schools granted an extra day off. Winds gusting above 40 mph and drifting complicate plowing as forecasters revise totals and forecasts throughout the day.
Profit taking swept the New York market as prices declined in heavy trading. The noon Dow fell 11.86 to 738.10, with more declines than advances on the New York Stock Exchange.

Clarence J. Kim aged 75 of 1428 Bever Avenue SE was in critical condition at University Hospitals Iowa City after an early morning blaze at his home. He suffered second and third degree burns over 50 to 60 percent of his body and was moved from Mercy Hospital to Iowa City. Fire officers cited accelerant ignition of a sofa as the probable cause, noting Kim notified the station around 4 am and attempted to fight the fire himself. The two story frame house sustained minor damage beyond the sofa area.
The American Indian Movement's national treasurer said he and about 20 armed AIM members occupied the Fairchild Corp plant in Shiprock New Mexico on Monday, seizing two guards. The group said the takeover was peaceful and aimed at pressuring demands on Navajo land and health care services.
