Sen. Proxmire seeks revival of party caucuses to curb John son authority but has attracted no public support. Behind the scenes Democrats privately criticize Johnson while some praise him, with Neuberger accusing Proxmire of turning on a benefactor and seeking favors.
John D. Randall of Cedar Rapids was elected president of the American Bar Association by the Chicago based 240 member house of delegates. He will assume the role in August and has long guided bar activities including two years as chairman of the ABA house of delegates.
Gov. Loveless nominated Earl Jarvis for the conservation commission and Sherry Fisher for a conservation panel seat. Maurice Crabbe was named for the state board of regents. Foster and Reynolds were named for replacement. Foster asked not to be reappointed and Reynolds declined comment.
The Rev. Fred Manthey quits after church board declines support for his ad advocating integration of Levittown’s first Negro family the Myers. Riots, walkouts, and a church split follow the controversial move drawing outside pressure and community tension.
The Supreme Court upheld that states may tax net income of out-of-state corporations based on in-state earnings. The 6-3 decision, involving Georgia and Minnesota cases, affirms that commerce bears state costs. Justice Clark authored the majority and Justice Whittaker wrote a dissent.
Premier Khrushchev after two days with Prime Minister Macmillan dismissed a 4 power meeting on Germany as unwise. He urged talks only between the two German states and proposed a broader treaty discussion among nations who fought Hitler. He warned against border violations in Berlin as aggression and floated a 20 to 50 year nonaggression pact with Britain. He also attacked the Shah of Iran and recalled Anastas Mikoyan’s U.S. visit with a quip about hooligans and space hopes in Los Angeles.
The Iowa Senate passed a nonpartisan judiciary reform by a 31 to 19 vote after defeating two amendments. Proponents argued the amendments would cripple the plan. Nolan’s would leave judge selection to the legislature and Moore’s would have left nominating commissions to lawmakers.
In San Juan AP dispatch Walter Reuther leads a revolt against AFL-CIO President George Meany's control as the merged federation faces pressures from CIO and AFL factions. Reuther wins support for an unemployed conference with himself chairing the arranging committee. The weeklong dispute over policy making underscores tensions at the winter meeting.
Washington Rep. Steven V. Carter said he may cut the $11,873 annual salary of his son Steven A. Carter or remove him from the office payroll. The freshman pre law student at George Washington University began work Jan. 7, but Carter said he might have erred in employing his son at the top pay while battling lymphoblastoma. He noted doctors expect to control the cancer and he plans to continue working during treatments at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He described the employment as temporary to keep the office running during his illness.
The American Bar Association approved a report urging stronger internal security laws and acknowledging broad criticism of some Supreme Court rulings. At the winter meeting the house defeated motions to remove references criticizing decisions on Communist activity and internal security.
Evanston UPI reports orchestra leader Griff Williams aged fifty died Monday of a heart attack. A Stanford graduate, he started as second pianist with Anson Weeks in 1933, formed his own group, and rose to fame with an engagement at the Mark Hopkins hotel in San Francisco in 1934. He toured nationwide before semi retiring in 1953.
Iowa's traffic death rate fell to a record low of 5.0 fatalities per 100 million miles in 1958, says the State Safety Department. The 1952 low was 5.3, with 1957 at 6.8 and the worst year 11.5 in 1935.
