Watery list grows as budget soars to 2.9 million

The Iowa DNR water monitoring program will increase its annual budget from 150000 to 2900000, supervisor Mary Skopec said. The 2004 draft list covers 211 waters, up from 205, including Cedar River and Iowa River segments in Linn and Johnson counties, with problems like elevated bacteria nitrates and declining aquatic life. Mussel declines prompted adding portions of Cedar Iowa Wapsipinicon Maquoketa rivers. Upper Iowa River enters the list for first time. Thirty five waters were removed from 2002 list.
