Students rally for more funding for regents institutions
About 75 students from Iowa State University and other regents campuses gathered in Des Moines to urge lawmakers for higher education funding. They cited rising tuition and loans as Gov Branstad proposed a 1996 increase of under 1 percent, while the Board of Regents sought 4 percent. Senate targets added 9 million, but lawmakers warn that may still fall short. Senator Redfern argued for capital and direct funds from surplus to sustain higher education. House Speaker Corbett said universities will gain 20 million in a separate salary package but funding remains below student desires.
