Iowa GOP budget plan targets university and human services cuts
House Speaker Brent Siegrist says the state faces negative growth and no new revenue. The GOP plan seeks nearly 8.7 million in cuts to regent universities and human services while shielding K 12 schools prisons Medicaid payments property tax reimbursements and the Iowa Veterans Home. Governor Vilsack questions the plan saying it could jeopardize public safety and warns of possible layoffs. Republicans expect a Veto clash but plan to move deappropriations to his desk.

Aiden Rush, a Tipton infant with biliary atresia, received a bloodless liver transplant at USC and Children’s Hospital after his grandmother donated part of her liver. Surgeons used blood saving techniques to avoid transfusions, recycling blood from the incision. The family traveled from Tipton to Los Angeles for the operation and report the baby is now behaving like a normal child.
