Watt proposes moratorium on mining in wilderness areas
Interior Secretary James Watt announced on Meet the Press a plan to seek congressional action banning mining and drilling in wilderness areas through year 2100 with a possible narrow exception for national needs. He outlined two five year deadlines after which no new wilderness designations could occur, covering 80 million acres plus 20 million proposed. Environmentalists reacted with surprise and distrust, some calling the plan a Trojan horse as GOP support remains uncertain.
