Flax Gains Interest as Non Depleting Nurse Crop in Iowa
An AAA ruling classifies flax used as a nurse crop with non depleting status if a good stand of legumes or grasses is established. Iowa farmers may grow flax as a cash crop on land taken out of corn, with two disease resistant varieties Bison and Red Wing suited to local conditions. Early April sowings outperform late plantings, and flax follows well after clean cultivated corn using oats or small grains for nurse crops.
