Bush appoints Pryor to appeals court via recess move
President Bush bypassed Senate Democrats to install Alabama Attorney General William Pryor as a U.S. appeals court judge in a second recess appointment in five weeks. Pryor’s selection sparked Democratic opposition over his abortion and homosexuality comments, while Bush defended the action as overcoming obstructionist tactics. The appointment runs until the end of the next Congress in 2005.
