Atlanta audit claims city underreported crime to aid Olympics
An audit commissioned by the Atlanta Police Foundation alleges that Atlanta police officers downgraded or suppressed thousands of crime reports to boost the city’s chances of securing the 1996 Olympics and to promote tourism. The report says underreporting began during site selection and continued at least until 2002, with Chief Richard Pennington endorsing the findings and proposing funding to hire more than 300 officers to curb drug-related violence.
