Medicare study urges reallocating funds from high spenders
A Dartmouth led study argues Medicare savings of about 30 percent could come from shifting funds from high spending states rather than boosting payments to low spenders like Iowa. It finds excessive tests and costly specialists drive U.S. spending, with limited impact on outcomes. Iowa officials cite unfair formulas and low reimbursements threatening local care. Senator Grassley supports controlling costs, suggests rewards for efficient care, while physicians warn reforms must preserve access.
