A World War II Flag Returns to National Museum

William Helscher of Washington Iowa will present a World War II flag saved from the USS Shasta in 1945 to the U S Naval Museum in a 2 p m ceremony at the Iowa National Guard Armory. The flag is one of three remaining from the Iwo Jima battle era and will join the Mount Suribachi flags in Rock Island Arsenal’s collection.

The battle began February 19 1945 as U S Marines and a Navy corpsman raised the U S flag on Mount Suribachi four days later. Iwo Jima was secured March 16 cementing American control.

Kristin Janssen of Cedar Rapids demonstrated a defibrillator similar to the device used to save Joel Schatzman, father of Northwestern wrestler Scott Schatzman, at the Feb 6 meet. Janssen, staff at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, helped after a scream drew responders.

Rescuers use AED to revive Missouri spectator at wrestling meet

In Carver-Hawkeye Arena a 54-year-old Chesterfield man collapsed during a Iowa Hawkeye match. An advanced life support instructor and crowd medics used an Automated External Defibrillator to restore his pulse while CPR continued. The device had been purchased for campus by the University of Iowa.
