In Mississippi Valley Conference play second-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy defeated cross-town rival Jefferson 66 to 58. The game was reported on page 1B.
David Brom, 16, a Lourdes High School student, was charged in Rochester Minnesota with four counts of first degree murder and eight counts of second degree murder for the killings of his parents and three siblings. An overnight manhunt led to his arrest after neighbors and friends reported a drastic change in his behavior.
Doctors at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics plan an AIDS outpatient clinic to unify medical and social services and to conduct HIV related drug research. Clinic director Dr. Jack Stapleton says the project will improve care for the growing patient load and support disease study.
An arbitrator restored a disputed pay step in Iowa's comparable worth plan, a decision that would distribute about 1.3 million dollars among 1,654 state employees. The ruling by Habbo Fokkena resolved a grievance over seniority pay to women under the agreement reached in 1984.

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced on Iowa Public Television that he will run for governor in 1990. The 43 year old Democrat said his eight years as AG lead to broader justice and economic opportunity. He previously considered the race in 1982 and 1986 but delayed for family reasons.
