Space center strike unsettles shuttle testing at Boeing
Richard Smith, director of the space center, said machinists walked out without warning endangering remaining test operations. Boeing has a plan to handle the strike though impact on flights is as yet unclear. Astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen watched from the air as the engines produced over 1 million pounds of thrust, with Young circling 4,000 feet above the pad and Crippen 1,000 feet higher in shuttle training jets.

Shuttle engines burn test exceeds expectations at launch pad
Launch control spokesman Hugh Harris said all three engines burned successfully as flames escaped through a hole in the mobile launch platform and were deflected by a brick-lined trench. The shuttle, powered by four fuel cells, sounded and felt like a launch while winds would have postponed a real takeoff. Before April 7, 88 square feet of insulation must be repaired and secured with a cargo net during firing.

Ex-Judge Morrison Under Grand Jury Probe in Iowa
Former Iowa judge who served on the 8-A Judicial District bench since 1971 faced a grand jury investigation into allegations that he solicited sexual favors from Teal Septer Nichting as a bribe to influence his official acts. The indictment cites an April 25 1980 incident and counts of bribery solicitation and assault. Morrison, who resigned amid the probe, had been appointed by Gov. Robert Ray in 1971 and re elected in 1978. The case involved state investigators coordinating with the attorney general’s office and featured testimony from Nichting county officials and fellow judges. Thursday Ray appointed Robert Bates to finish Morrison’s term.
