Insurance fraud tied to Middle East groups, U S studies

Investigators claim Middle Eastern students in the United States collected up to five million dollars in fraudulent auto theft, accident, disability, burglary and arson claims. Money allegedly funded the PLO and Arab groups. In California more than 60 student visa holders from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Iran were identified in the scheme. One arrest made, warrants out for others. The FBI and State Department are involved.

Near-miss theft at Rubias Hardware nearly nets $1 081

A Cedar Rapids tool department manager narrowly avoided a $1 081 scam. A man claiming to be from Iowa State University Ames requested Rockwell tools and a purchase order number and urged bills be sent to Iowa State rather than the University of Iowa. The caller identified as John Cline.

Cedar Rapids man, 86, dies in car-pedestrian crash

An 86 year old Cedar Rapids man Anton Kurka was killed Saturday morning at Bowling Street and Twenty sixth Avenue SW after being struck by a southbound car driven by William Foster. Police said no charges filed as investigation continues. Kurka born June 9 1890 in Czechoslovakia came to the US in 1907. Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Alex Wery Cedar Rapids three sons Charles Joseph Henry Mt Holly New Jersey 13 grandchildren one great grandchild. Services set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Janeba Kuba funeral home with burial at Czech National cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Sunday.
